To what standards do the A class and B class filters correspond in the variable speed drives?
EMC environment and EMC input filter
Industrial and commercial EMC environments are described by standards, and Schneider Electric has designed EMC filters to comply with the radio interference levels specified in these standards.
Class A and class B filters
Class A filters are mainly used in industrial environments as they are suitable for the EMC environments described by the typical standards for this type of environment:
EN55011 class A group 1 or IEC/EN 61800-3 category C2
EN55011 class A group 2 or IEC/EN 61800-3 category C3
Class B filters are used in commercial (building) or domestic environments as they are suitable for the EMC environments described by the typical standards for these types of environment:
EN55011 class B group 2 or IEC/EN 61800-3 category C1
Class B filters provide higher performance than class A filters because commercial environments (offices, administration) need to have a higher level of protection than industrial environments.
Schneider Electric offer
The Schneider offer comprises drives with or without filter. If they have a filter, it may be class A or class B.
As an EMC filter incurs expenditure, it is must be optimised by answering the following questions:
Industrial or commercial environment (most important criterion)
Distance between drive and motor
Switching frequency
An optional additional filter can be added if the standard filter is not compatible with a more severe EMC environment than that for which it is designed.
However, the complete products are suitable for the majority of cases.
