CANopen

CANopen is an open network that is supported by over 400 company’s world wide and promoted by CAN in Automation. CANopen is standardised in the EN50325-4 and in
ISO15745-2 for its device description.

CANopen is built on CAN (Controller Area Network), an established and high performance multi-master serial bus network, originally developed for automotive applications and internationally standardised in 1993 as ISO11898-1.

CANopen offers open and highly flexible configuration capabilities. It is widely used in motion-orientated machine

control networks, distributed industrial architectures plus many varied fields such as rail vehicles, medical equipment, off-road vehicles, maritime electronics, public transportation and building automation.

CANopen as a Machine Bus
CANopen is a solution for machine bus distributed architectures from Schneider Electric. CANopen is easy to use, simple to implement and offers open connectivity to many Schneider Electric devices and a wide catalogue of third party products.

CANopen Cabling Architectures

CANopen supports 2 types of network architecture: daisy chain and multi-drop.

• Daisy Chain

This is the most economical cabling solution requiring only cable and connectors. The cable has to be cut to the required length and then simply attached to the connector for connection to the device. A micro-switch is integrated into the connector for end of line termination.

• Multi-Drop

This type of architecture offers flexibility and ease of installation using trunk cable, tap junction boxes and pre-assembled drop cables. To install, the tap junction boxes are mounted at the required locations and connected together via trunk cable. Drop cables are then simply connected to the tap junction box and the device.

CANopen Cable Offer

Three types of CANopen cable are offered: standard, UL certified and harsh environment. This provides the widest possible flexibility by allowing cables to be selected for any kind of environment or application.
